WATER QUALITY DESIGN STUDIO

Reedworks

Three stages. One cleaner river.

Build a treatment train

Choose the order and retention days for three different stages. Run the batch and meet all four discharge limits. Longer stays remove more pollution but use more land. The reed bed removes nitrogen best after the organic load has fallen. The biogas tank creates methane: its capture hood recovers 94%.

Choose a design, then run a batch to see its discharge.

Follow the water

Organic load (COD) and nitrogen are synthetic mass units. Land is retention days × stage footprint.

Model & source notes

First-order average decay, preferred nitrogen allocation, and methane accounting are scalar JavaScript adaptations of QSDsan, NCSA license. Rates are illustrative per-day values. Original reed inhibition, land costs and challenge limits create the design puzzle. No actual water safety or engineering decisions should use this simplified model.
